(Maritime Operations)
Master 5
1. Structure of Certificate
The Certificate III in Transport and Distribution (Maritime Operations)
is a nationally accredited certificate recognized in all States and
Territories and enables operation of a commercial vessel of less than 24
metres in length to operate within the limits of Offshore Operations in
Australian Waters as defined by the USL Code. Marine Safety Victoria
determines the limits imposed on a Certificate.
The USL code specifies a distance of 100 nautical miles offshore for a
Master Class 5. The Certificate of Competency may be endorsed, subject
to an applicant’s experience, for operations to a distance of 200
nautical miles on satisfactory completion of an examination in
Navigation and Position Determination at the level of Master Class 4.
2. Content
The certificate consists of the following units:
· Nautical Knowledge (Master
5)
· Coastal Navigation (Master
5)
· Ship Knowledge (Master 5)
·Radar (Master 5)
·Marine Radiotelephone
Operation
·First Aid
·Safety Equipment, Liferaft
and Firefighting
·Including overnight onboard
tuition
3. Delivery
The program is delivered in blocks of from 1 to 5 weeks and may be
arranged for weekdays, weekends or evenings depending on student
numbers. Delivery is flexible including classroom, onboard, remote
learning (correspondence) and private tuition.
4. Assessment
Is competency based through a mix of written multiple choice, group and
practical assessments.
5. Prerequisites
There are no specific entry requirements for the course although Marine
Safety Victoria requirements must be met before a Certificate will be
issued i.e. 900 days of sea time and pass a basic vision test.

7. Home Study Training
Guide
Home study training guides are available for students unable to attend
courses.
8. Training Manual
A comprehensive Training Manual is supplied
with the course. The manual can be obtained prior to the commencement of
the course by completing and returning the enclosed enrollment form to
Marine Training Services together with the course fee.
9. Course Venues
Courses are conducted at various locations throughout Victoria depending
on student demands.
10. Equipment
To complete the Navigation module you will require: parallel Rules or
equivalent, rubber, dividers, calculator (non scientific), drawing
compass, chart, 2B pencil.
11. Recognition of Prior Learning
Learners who have completed appropriate training, or through prior
learning and experience, believe they have gained the required skills
for modules within this course may be granted credit upon substantiation
of the claim.
