Certificate III in Transport and Distribution (Marine Engine Driving)
 Grade 2


1. Structure of Certificate

The Certificate III in Transport and Distribution (Marine Engine Driving - Grade 2) TDM 30207 is a nationally accredited certificate recognised in all Stages and Territories and enables the holder to:

       act as Chief Engineer on a commercial vessel:

 

·      of propulsion power less than 250 kW operating in designated Australian Coastal and Middle Waters laterally along the coast and within a limit of 600 nautical miles to seaward; or

·      of propulsion power 250 kW and over but less than 500 kW operating in designated Offshore Waters laterally along the coast and within a limit of 200 nautical miles to seaward; or

·      of propulsion power 500 kW and over but less than 750 kW operating in designated Inshore Waters laterally along the coast from the base or regular port of departure and within a limit of 15 nautical miles to seaward of the coast or of designated sheltered water limits.

 

       Or,

      

       act as Second Engineer on a Commercial vessel:

 

·      of propulsion power 500 kW and over but less than 750 kW operating in designated Australian Coastal and Middle Waters laterally along the coast and within a limit of 600 nautical miles to seaward; or

·      of propulsion power 750 kW and over but less than 1500 kW operating in designated Offshore Waters laterally along the coast and within a limit of 200 nautical miles to seaward.

 

       Marine Safety Victoria determines the limits imposed on a Certificate.

 

 

2. Course Content

          The course consists of the following compulsory units:

· Engineering Knowledge (MED 2)

· Refrigeration

· Use Tools. Handheld/Power

· Including onboard tuition

          The Certificate also requires:

· Level 2 First Aid

· Occupational Health & Safety at Sea (Liferaft and Firefighting)

 

3. Delivery

          Delivery is flexible including classroom, onboard, remote learning (correspondence) and private tuition.

 

4. Assessment

          Is competency based through a mix of written multiple choice, group and practical assessments.

 

5. Course Fees

          Please note: you will be given 12 months from the commencement of your course (or for Remote Learning students from the date of enrolment) to successfully complete all components of the MED 2 Course.

          Students who have not completed the course within the 12 month period will be required to re-enrol and pay a further course fee.

 

6. Prerequisites

          There are no specific entry requirements for the course, although Marine Safety Victoria requirements must be met before a Certificate will be issued, i.e. the total Qualifying Service in an appropriate capacity on vessels of not less than 150 kW propulsion power should include:

          If no previous training has been completed (eg MED 3), then at least 12 months qualifying service is required.

          Or,

          If a MED 3 Certificate of Competency has been granted then at least 6 months qualifying service while holding that certificate is required.

          Or,

          As a certified Marine Fitter, Diesel or Motor Mechanic, Refrigeration Mechanic or Electrical Fitter Mechanic, at least 3 months qualifying service is required.

          At least 50% of qualifying service should be with inboard engines.

          In addition service must be performed on a vessel underway in a capacity regularly engaged in engineering duties for not less than 5 hours in each calendar day on vessels of not less than 150 kW propulsion power.

 

7. Training Manual

          A comprehensive Training Manual is supplied with the course.

          The manual can be obtained prior to the commencement of the course by completing and returning the enclosed enrolment form to Marine Training Services together with the course fee.

 

8. Course Venues

          Courses are conducted at various locations throughout Victoria depending on student demands.

 

9. Recognition of Prior Learning

          Learners who have completed appropriate training, or through learning and experience, believe they have gained the required skills for modules within this course may be granted credit upon substantiation of the claim.
