(Maritime Operations)
Coxswain
1. Structure of Certificate
The Certificate II in Transport and Distribution Maritime Operations
(Coxswain) is a nationally accredited certificate recognized in all States
and Territories. The Certificate covers operation of a commercial vessel of
less than 12 metres in length and up to 250 KW’s, to limits determined by
Marine Safety Victoria. The Certificate of Course Completion is valid for 5
years.

3. Delivery
Delivery is
flexible including classroom, onboard, remote learning (correspondence) and
private tuition. The course may be arranged for weekdays, weekends or
evenings.
There will be a
compulsory two day practical boat handling component within the course.
4. Assessment
Is competency
based through a mix of written, multiple choice, group and practical
assessments. On satisfactory completion of the assessments students will be
issued with Certificate 11 in Transport & Distribution (Marine Operations).
5. Oral
Assessment
Oral
assessments will be conducted by Marine Safety Victoria by making an
appointment with them.
6. Prerequisites
There are no
specific entry requirements for the course although Marine Safety Victoria
requirements must be met before a commercial Certificate of Competency will
be issued ie. 360 days of boating experience on vessels of not less than 5
metres (service on pleasure craft may be included) and pass a basic vision

Please note:
you will be given 12 months
from the commencement of your course (or for Remote Learning students
from the date of enrolment) to successfully complete all components of
the Coxswain Course.
Students who have
not completed the course within the 12 month period will be required to
re-enrol and pay a further course fee.
8. Training Manual
Comprehensive manuals are supplied with the course. The manuals can be
obtained prior to the commencement of the course by completing and
returning the enclosed enrolment form to Marine Training Services
together with the course fee.
9. Home Study Training Guides
Study
Materials include: All Training Guides, Marine Radio Handbooks and
exam fees, Symbols & Abbreviations and various Handouts. Home study
training guides are available for students unable to attend courses.
10. Course Venue
Courses are
conducted at various locations throughout Victoria depending on student
demands.
The courses
can be conducted in Marine Training Services Training Unit or any
suitable classroom.
11. Recognition of Prior Learning
Learners
who have completed appropriate training, or through prior learning and
experience, believe they have gained the required skills for modules
within this course may be granted credit upon substantiation of the
claim.
